Quick Speed Boost

Try these steps in order for immediate improvement:

1

Switch to WireGuard Protocol

WireGuard offers the fastest speeds with minimal overhead. Go to Settings > Protocol > WireGuard.

2

Connect to Nearest Server

Choose a server geographically close to you. Shorter distance means lower latency.

3

Check Server Load

Avoid servers showing high load. Switch to a less congested location in the same region.

4

Use 5GHz WiFi

If on WiFi, connect to 5GHz band instead of 2.4GHz for faster speeds.

5

Close Background Apps

Other apps using bandwidth affect VPN speed. Close unnecessary applications.

Speed Test

Test your speed without VPN first to establish a baseline. VPN speeds should be 70-90% of your base connection.

Protocol Speed Rankings

WireGuard - Fastest

Modern protocol with minimal overhead. Best for streaming, downloads, and gaming.

VLESS with Reality - Fast

Good balance of speed and security. Great for restricted networks with mimicry profiles.

OrbConnect - Fast

OrbVPN's own HTTPS-tunnel protocol with advanced obfuscation and strong speed when WireGuard's UDP is blocked.

SSH Tunnel - Steady

SOCKS5-over-SSH with optional OSSH obfuscation. More overhead than the others, but it gets through firewalls that fingerprint everything except SSH.

Transports affect speed too

Every protocol has multiple transport modes. The fastest path is always the most direct one — WireGuard direct UDP, VLESS Reality-TCP, OrbConnect direct HTTPS. Stealth transports like CDN-Fronting add a Cloudflare hop, so they trade a little speed for the ability to bypass heavy censorship. If you do not need stealth, pick the direct transport. See the Transport Modes guide.

Server Selection Tips

Geographic Proximity

Always choose the server closest to your physical location for lowest latency.

Server Load

Check load indicators. Green (low) is best, yellow (medium) is okay, avoid red (high).

Time of Day

Peak hours (evenings, weekends) have higher load. Try off-peak times for better speeds.

Streaming Servers

Use streaming-optimized servers for video content. They're tuned for high bandwidth.

Activity-Based Optimization

Choose the right settings based on what you're doing:

Streaming

WireGuard protocol + nearest streaming server + enable split tunneling for local apps.

Gaming

WireGuard protocol + lowest ping server + disable background apps for minimal latency.

Downloading

Any fast protocol + high-capacity server + ensure no bandwidth limits on network.

Browsing

Auto protocol selection + any server + balanced settings for everyday use.

Network Optimization

1

Check Base Speed

Run a speed test without VPN connected. This is your maximum possible speed.

2

Use Wired Connection

Ethernet is faster and more stable than WiFi. Use wired when possible.

3

Optimize WiFi

Move closer to router, use 5GHz band, and minimize interference from other devices.

4

Limit Other Devices

Other devices on your network consume bandwidth. Pause streaming on other devices.

ISP Throttling

Some ISPs throttle traffic they recognize as a VPN. If speeds are consistently slow on one protocol, switch to VLESS with Reality and a mimicry profile so your traffic looks like an ordinary service the ISP will not throttle. When you connect on Auto (Smart Connect), OrbVPN tests protocols, transports, and mimicry profiles in the best order for your region and locks in the first one that passes traffic verification — a great way to route around a throttle without guessing. You can also open the Hylon tab in the app for speed-optimization tips; it answers offline with an on-device model and escalates to a live AI for deeper help.

Common Speed Issues

Sudden Speed Drops

Server may be congested. Switch to a different server immediately.

Consistently Slow

Check base internet speed. May be ISP limitation, not VPN.

Slow on Mobile Data

Carrier may throttle VPN traffic. Switch to VLESS (its Reality transport masquerades as ordinary HTTPS) to bypass the throttle.

Buffering While Streaming

Switch to WireGuard protocol and streaming-optimized servers.
