Frequently Asked Questions
What is a warrant canary?+
A warrant canary is a statement that a company publishes saying it has NOT received certain types of legal requests. If the statement disappears or isn't updated, users can infer that the company may have received such a request and is legally prohibited from disclosing it directly.
Why do companies use warrant canaries?+
In many jurisdictions, companies can be legally compelled to provide user data and prohibited from disclosing that they received such a request (a 'gag order'). While companies can't say they received a request, they can stop saying they haven't.
How often is this canary updated?+
We update our warrant canary on the 1st of every month. If more than 31 days pass without an update, you should assume the canary is no longer valid.
How can I verify the signature?+
You can verify our PGP signature using our public key, available on our website and on public keyservers. This proves the statement hasn't been tampered with and was signed by OrbVPN.
